Leftover sticky rice from mango sticky rice? Learn how to store it in the fridge or freezer and reheat it by steaming, microwave, or rice cooker so it is soft and fresh again.

If you cannot finish your sticky rice, whether it came with mango sticky rice or another Thai dessert, do not throw it away. It keeps well in the refrigerator or freezer, and with the right technique it reheats to the same soft, chewy texture it had when it was fresh. Here are three easy methods: steaming, microwave, and rice cooker.

How to store sticky rice

Divide the cooled sticky rice into single-serving portions and pack them in zip-top bags or heat-safe containers. If you plan to eat it within 3–5 days, keep it in the refrigerator; for a month or longer, store it in the freezer.

How to reheat sticky rice

1. In a steamer

Place the sticky rice in a heat-safe dish and set it in a steamer over boiling water. Steam for 10–15 minutes, or until it is as soft as you like.

2. In the microwave

Put the sticky rice in a microwave-safe container and sprinkle a little water over it, or wrap it in a damp piece of cheesecloth or a clean kitchen towel. Microwave for about 1 minute, then turn the rice over, sprinkle with a little more water, and microwave for another 30 seconds.

3. In a rice cooker

Place the sticky rice in a heat-safe bowl or wrap it in a thin piece of clean white cloth, then set it on top of regular rice as it cooks. It will steam through and come out soft and warm.

Tips

  • A light sprinkle of water before reheating is the key to keeping the grains soft rather than dry and hard.
  • Thaw frozen sticky rice in the fridge overnight for the most even reheating.
