Salty pretzels tossed in butter, vanilla, brown sugar, and espresso powder, baked until caramelized, then dipped in melted chocolate. A foolproof 30-minute holiday treat.
The easiest chocolate, brown sugar, and espresso spiced pretzels. These chocolate-dipped pretzels are what I call a "foolproof" holiday dessert. They are made with salty pretzels, butter, vanilla, brown sugar, instant espresso, and chocolate, and they are dangerously good. Every pretzel is sweet, with notes of vanilla and espresso, a bit like your favorite holiday latte but with the salty crunch of a pretzel. Sweet, salty, chocolatey: there is nothing not to love. They are incredibly simple, perfect for parties, and just as perfect packaged up as a gift for friends.
For the first Friday of November, here is one of our simplest Thanksgiving recipes. And yes, these always look impressive and taste even better.
The idea came about naturally. I was talking with my mom about ideas for our holiday dinners, including the Thanksgiving family dinner we are hosting in Colorado this year. We both agreed we wanted things to be simple rather than fussy. I ran some dessert ideas past her and, of course, she loved every chocolate-covered thing on my list.
One of her favorites was these pretzels. She said they sounded delicious and perfect for easy snacking over the holidays. They are also lovely wrapped up for loved ones or as a fun edible hostess gift.
I asked whether she thought the idea was too simple, but she assured me that the ease of making them is exactly what makes the recipe exciting.
So I tested them for our 2023 Thanksgiving menu, and they turned out wonderfully. We are actually a little obsessed. I am looking forward to making these for Thanksgiving, and they will be great packaged up in this year's Christmas cookie boxes too.
The details: these are easy
Step 1: Prep and bake the pretzels
For this recipe I used a bag of salted pretzels. My personal favorite is the large twists, but pretzel rods or mini pretzels work too. Both are great for gifting.
Toss the pretzels with the melted butter and vanilla in a large bowl, then spread them out on a baking sheet.
Step 2: Espresso sugar
Mix the brown sugar with instant espresso powder. I also like to add a little cinnamon for warmth, about 1/2 teaspoon.
Sprinkle the sugar generously over every pretzel.
Step 3: Bake
Bake the pretzels so the butter and sugar caramelize.
Keep a close eye on them toward the end of baking, because the sugar will burn if the oven runs hot.
Step 4: Chocolate dip
Once the pretzels are cool enough to handle, dip them in melted chocolate. I used chocolate chips, but semisweet, dark, or milk chocolate bars all work well.
Now freeze the pretzels to set the chocolate quickly. That is it, the recipe is done. Pile them in a pretty box to serve, or package them up as a simple homemade holiday gift.
I made a big batch yesterday to share with my family, and they are officially in love with these flavors.
It always seems to be the simplest desserts that are truly the most loved.
